As a gal who rarely denies herself much at all when I am in the mood (As the new Wii FIT and GHD straighteners and expensive Philip Kingsley shampoo and conditioner which all arrived this morning will attest to) I would make this wee contribution to get you thinking today.
This has been prompted by my friend and top gal Judith Morgan (see www.judithmorgan.com and www.themoneygym.com). Life is way too short to not do/have the things you want, particularly those things that brighten your day (flowers fall in here for me) or make you go mmmm (clean crisp sheets here) IF you can afford it and even if you can S-T-R-E-T-C-H to it and it makes you happy then why not just do it? I wash my own gear and dry it .The lovely cleaner does a bit each week but tis not her forte. so..I periodically get the ironing shop down the road to collect it and return it in all that very un_PC plastic and wire hangers (I take the wire hangers back when I am passing to assuage my guilty footprint). There’s a great florist at my tube station who does the best hand tied bouquets this side of Columbia Road Market. I buy one every fortnight if I am passing through and I reckon this costs me around £300- £400 a year. She is a small stallholder, built her business from nowt but a £500 inheritance form her granny 12 years ago and that keeps me going there rather than waitrose or tescos who freeze their flowers to make them look good and last only 7 days.
The flowers are an essential aesthetic to bring joy and delight into my life each week. I work hard and I deserve them. In 5-10 years time some of the things we consider luxuries will be seen as essentials not options. Just think about many of our mothers who would not entertain a cleaner as though that was an indulgence or somehow giving in to failure on the domestic goddess front. I am all for starting the "efficient domestic slut enjoying life indulgence brigade”. Now, that said, a little word of caution to all of you joining me in getting out your 0% credit card as I write. Can you afford it, does it make your life easier and bring you joy and finally -does it earn you your efficiency badge in the domestic goddess/ slut brigade-either brigade will do.
Now for the best bit. My list of luxuries I would like. One day.
A proper personal assistant - Someone to walk around after me and pick up on every thought, every to do that comes out of my head- cards, appointments, research, picking up laundry, taking stuff to repair shops, calling the plumber, waiting in for whoever, signing for packages, getting me people to do the admin when I get overloaded (before I get overloaded actually) etc....I want one now but is the cost of the GHDs and the Wii fits in my life stopping me from having one I ask?
A swimming pool - I would like to get my swimmy on first thing and just dive in (well flop never been very good at diving)
Someone who pops around when I am not looking to keep my front path free of leaves, paper and the recycling box in order- If they could do the weeding and take the weeds away too that would be great- a kind of front garden fairy.
A designated parking space outside my house so that I never have to load and unload almost a street away when the parking angel has stopped listening and has gone on strike (she provides a good solution to the parking 9 times out of 10)
A magimix and ice cream maker- I know I would never use either enough to justify having them and they would irritate me taking up kitchen space but I would like one of each someday all the same- probably when I have a bigger kitchen.
A BandO system that wakes you up saying "time to get up marie.. time to get up..." and has a great sound
I'd also like a talking watch that programmes itself to alert me 15 minutes before I am due to leave one place to get to another with a message something like "move your backside or for want of trying to fit in too many things you will be late again oh tardy one"
A personal trainer who comes to me on demand- i.e. I've got an hour, get over here before I change my mind about the squats and crunches.
Everyday luxuries I would like to have always rather than treats include ..
Neals yard hand wash
Penhaligons room spray and candles
Egyptian cotton many threaded sheets from that little linen house near Selfridges- crisp white or cream
Jo Malone orange blossom shower gel
A pedicure and reflexology weekly
Bollinger
Pol Roger Sir Winston Churchill
The means to book a holiday anytime to anywhere I want for however long , and with whoever I want to pay for too.(this is the number one lux)
Time
Now you may think I have gone extravagance mad. I haven't. These things are top of mind. I’ve been thinking a lot about what I want for me and mine a lot today because in this last week one of my dearest and oldest friends (aged 46 and fit) had a serious but thankfully not fatal (thanks to the good and truly wonderful NHS) heart attack. Also, a school friend who I have not seen in years died of liver failure from hitting the bottle for the last 5 years leaving a hubby and a small child.
This makes you think doesn’t it- So I encourage you to consider, what makes you happy? What luxuries would you have in your everyday life if you could afford them? Can you see a time when you can have them? Can you at least give yourself a little taste of luxury, a little smidgen of indulgence this week?
Who’s next? Send me your list and let’s get manifesting....
Meanwhile I'd better manifest my posterior downstairs to open the Wi fit box and get it set up.
Enjoy
Marie
